One dead, 9 wounded in Dallas suburb Halloween house party shooting

(CNN) — A shooting at a Halloween party in a Dallas suburb left one man dead and nine others injured Thursday night, police said.

The shootings erupted shortly after 8 p.m. at a residential home in Mesquite, Texas, and 911 dispatchers received at least three emergency calls, police said.

One victim’s family told CNN affiliate KTVT that the shooting was over a girl.

At least one shooter also was injured, police said. The most seriously wounded victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition, and nine others’ injuries were considered minor.

Investigators had gathered evidence, but had not yet located a weapon, according to Mesquite police Sgt. Eric Timmons.

“The investigation is ongoing, and we are pursuing a number of theories, including possible gang activity. We also are investigating to find out if this was an isolated incident or if it may have been associated with any other crimes going on in the area,” Timmons said.

The Dallas suburb of nearly 100,000 people sits about 16 miles northwest of Dallas, and is adjacent to Mesquite ISD, the area’s largest district.

The school district’s website said classes were not affected.

The incident prompted “all Area School District students to avoid movement for an extended period of time as a precautionary measure,” the district said in a statement. The school lockdown was lifted at 11:25 p.m.
