Former U.S. soldier, Christian volunteer and restaurateur PFC Cass Jones returns to Afghanistan in “Christmas at Bagram,” a remarkable exclusive interview with Fox News on “The Real Story” airing tonight at 10p ET on Fox News Channel.
Jones was a 22-year-old in 2010 when he enlisted in the military in response to 9/11. He ended up in Afghanistan.
Before he left, he sent a letter to his brother that said, “I know this is the place that I’m supposed to go at some point in my life. I’m really proud of what I’ve done as a soldier. I’m leaving but I wouldn’t give it up for the world. I never will.”
But last year, Jones got another surprise: He got a phone call from the Defense Department.
“I didn’t expect anything, not to this extreme,” he said. “So I go over to DVIDs. I found out that I was going to be deployed on May 6th. And they say, ‘by the way, we’re probably sending you back to Afghanistan.’”
Jones was very conflicted as he arrived in Bagram.
“I felt like a coward but I had a distinct urge to get out. And I knew that I wouldn’t be able to do anything, to come home, for my family or for me if I stayed,” he said.
Jones and his fellow troops were later sent to Kunduz, a town in northern Afghanistan.
He remembers the city was in shambles and the surrounding countryside was cut off from civilization. A suicide bomber had just killed four people in a market.
Jones and his team were trying to get humanitarian aid to those in need. But, Jones, and others, were themselves under attack. They lived through it all and came back unharmed.
So how did he return to that city and work there?
Jones is still serving on humanitarian missions with his company, Fox Street Comfort.
“A lot of great things can happen when you can fix all this bitterness and rage you have inside yourself,” he said.
Jones has tried to show his brothers-in-arms that they can come home. When he tells them they should stick with God, their heart grasps.
